1978

1978

A big year!  I spent 9 months of it pregnant!

But we still had fun in the mean time.

Ken doing needle point?    these were the days we use to get together with friends and play $.05, $.10, $.25 poker most weekends.  I really enjoyed those get togethers.  Something happened after we had kids---we quit doing much of anything until they were in school.  Then it was a different group of friends and activities revolving around the kids.

Our new car.  It was a Volare, with a V-8 engine.  It had some power!!!  I remember my Dad borrowed it the one time they came out for a visit in a Winnebago and I could hear the wheels screeching as he turned the corners for a couple miles down the road.
The Dodge Swinger that my parents had bought for me when I was in high school.  We took over payments when we got married.  I loved that car.  We got rear ended on Lindbergh one day and it got totalled.
Back in the day I snacked on Peanut butter on crackers.
I presume this was my birthday.
We also use to go visit Ken's grandma Cecelia about once every couple of months and take her out to dinner.  She was a sweet old lady---despite what her daughter-in-law said.
Back in the day I use to make a lot of crafts.  This was actually my project, not Ken's.  I was even in a quilting club at church for awhile.  I was by far the youngest in the group!  But they were a great group of ladies.
I also did a LOT of ceramics.  Even had a ton of molds and would sell "greenware" to ceramic stores.  Back then, people use to go to ceramic shops and work on their own.  Seems to be an art that's lost now.  I must have made and sold about 75 nativity sets, not to mention all the ornaments, mugs, planters, chess sets, ... .
I did a lot of them at home, too.

 Another wedding.

We made our usual summer trip to Oregon, too.  This is in the Dallas city park.
 so is this.
I believe this was up by the Columbia River gorge.
Ken sporting a shirt I made for him---yes, I use to sew back then, too.  After seeing this shirt, it's a good thing I quit.
Ken had a summer conference in Florida, too. I think I was about 4 months pregnant here.

Same trip, we drove and stopped at Elvis's house in Memphis along the way.

My baby shower.  But I don't remember who threw it for me?  Retta?

Back in those days, ultrasounds weren't routinely done.  So we had no idea if we were having a boy or girl.  I had an original due date of Dec. 18th, but when my water broke on the 22nd, they were saying because of my size, they expected the baby to be really small.

Much to my surprise (and the Dr's), Tim was 8 lbs, 5 oz.  Not a small baby!  But labor lasted about 18 hours.  They even prepped me for a cesarean, but didn't have to do it.    He decided to make his appearance during the middle of The Incredible Hulk show.

Back then, they didn't kick you out of the hospital right away, either.  So we were in the hospital for Christmas.

Happy to have a healthy baby boy.

The hospital photo of Tim from right after his birth.

Not sure if this is actually 1978 or into the beginning of 1979.  Tim looks pretty alert for 1978 seeing as he was born on Dec. 22.
 His first bed.
He also spent a lot of time in a cheapie "pumpkin seat".  That doesn't seem to be popular anymore, either.

Since I wasn't home for xmas, this was after xmas.  The Dr's kept saying he wasn't going to be born until later in Jan or Feb. and that he was small.  So Ken took the rest of his vacation right before he was born.  Then a major snow storm hit and he was working 80 hours a week the first couple weeks I was home alone with Tim.

What a great year!  Now to figure out how to be a Mom!

Oregon----1980-1993

1980 When the St. Louis summer got exceptionally hot, I said it's time to head to Oregon!  So we did! This was probably the trip when ...
